Personality; Karkat is a very emotional troll. Perhaps one of the most emotional trolls. More often than not his bark is far worse than his bite. He’s prone to being loud and demanding of those around him, but at the same time he does his best to be understanding and try to work with people to make sure things run as smoothly as possible. Of course, he also has a pretty short temper at times, which results in him making reckless (and oftentimes catastrophic) decisions.
Karkat has a very obvious inferiority complex, one which he tries to rise above. He knows he’ll never be able to be a threshecutioner due to his mutant blood, but he still aspires for greater things. He believes he’s meant to be a great leader, and when put in the position he really does put his all into it.
Of course everyone is their own worst critic, and Karkat takes this idea to brutal extremes. The boy is so full of self-loathing, he frequently hold long conversations with himself from different timelines, which are pretty much 100% guaranteed to end in shouting matches of which Karkat is the worst, more horrible, smarmier, idiotic Karkat. It’s so bad at times; he sometimes thinks he’s fallen in hate-love with himself!
Speaking of hate-love, it’s also important to note that Karkat is genuinely a romantic. He loves romance so much that he has basically turned it into something that can be studied to the finest detail. He watches really horrible romcoms, and is damn proud of that fact. He considers himself an expert, and often gives romantic advice to anyone who asks for it (and often times to people who don’t ask for it). Unfortunately, despite his apparent plethora of knowledge on the subject, he is absolutely horrible and handling his own love life, almost to a point that it’s a bit insulting to Terezi, the girl he has his eye on. Like with most situations Karkat can talk the talk, but he sure as hell can’t walk the walk.
While not a coward, Karkat is prone to crying a lot when the going gets tough. Of course watching your friends die, being betrayed, and being terrorized by killer clowns is probably enough to make even the bravest of men lose it. Karkat’s just genuinely emotional, and even if he tries to hide it, it really does show.
Through-out his journey through the furthest ring, Karkat has developed sort of a defeatist attitude. He believe he’s lost his chance with the one girl he genuinely cares a lot for, is overwhelmed with the revelation that he HAS an ancestor (and hates him at that), and just plain seems to be down on himself again, as usual. He’s reminiscing about his youth on Alternia, and his foolish aspirations to be a Threshecutioner. He’s chosen to, if given the chance, follow Meenah on her quest to find and defeat Lord English, something which he is HIGHLY UNLIKELY to return from alive. He seems set on going out getting to live his childhood dream, if nothing else.
